The plane journey was easy and quick, and the plane was pretty much empty apart from me a a handful of business men and women, who stared at me like I had feet where my hands should be, confused and suspicious. I took Issue 5 of Oh Comely with me on the plane, and I had a picture of my breakfast but it's gone with my hard drive.
The first thing I noticed when we walked into town is how clean everything is. I mean it's just SO CLEAN. and square, very, very square. We walked around Cologne a lot so I got to do my tourist thang, but we also looked at the more local side to the city which was really interesting. I didn't take too many pictures of the city itself but here are my favourites. The middle picture is of Leyla in her favourite spot at a noodle bar, and I love it.
There was a lot of food involved which I felt I couldn't say no to, being the over polite Englishman (woman) and stuffing myself to bursting point. There was also a building with a giant ice cream on it, which I thought was pretty darn cool to be honest. On the far right picture, you can't read the sign, but they're 'celebrate the royal wedding' cupcakes. What can I say.
On the second to last day we went to a 'museum island' which was basically a giant garden with a lot of gallery buildings and sculptures dotted around for you to stumble across at your own leisure. The art was all really minimal and scribbly, and the scultpures were all tangly and life confirming... It was a wierd and wonderful place, and the perfect place to shoot an Alice in Wonderland film. I really thought dancing cards were going to pop out at me for half the day. Some of the pictures are a little over exposed because I forgot I was wearing my sunglasses.
If you ever find yourself in Cologne and like me you like kooky and cute stuff, then I really recommend you look for a shop called Postkarten. It has an array of cute notebooks and arty books, I bought a book called 'Indie Craft' by Jo Waterhouse. What's really great is that a lot of the books are written in english so there's no worry there. Upstairs they have this immense selection of postcards laid out in a way which reminded me of singles shops, so you can flick through them all. Unfortunately I lost the picture of the shop, but I found a couple of pictures of it here and here.
